Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP Treatment: Don't Let The Name Fool You

The term "partial hospitalization" (PHP) can be misleading, often evoking images of hospital settings from the past. While insurance companies still use this outdated language, today's PHPs offer a much different experience. The best PHPs now provide care in a comforting, non-institutional environment where adults can participate in non-judgmental therapy, engage in therapeutic activities, and return home at the end of the day. A more fitting and preferred name for a PHP is a "Therapeutic Day Program".

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Adults participating in PHPs typically engage in five hours daily of clinical interventions, including specialized therapies and group therapy, five days a week. These programs also incorporate life skills training and various activities. Most days at Sol offer one or more experiential therapy activities such as yoga, art, music, exercise, meditation, and mindfulness.

PHPs offer more comprehensive care than intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), though they are less intensive than inpatient residential treatment centers. Clients in PHPs continue to live at home or in a supportive housing environment outside of program hours.
